By the end of 2025, Australia celebrated a record-breaking year for electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Total EV sales surpassed 157,000 units—a massive 38% increase compared to 2024. For the first time in history, battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales alone exceeded 100,000 units in a single year.

EVs now account for 13.1% of all new car sales in Australia, up from 9.6% in 2024. This growth was capped off by a historic December 2025, where EVs captured a record monthly market share of 16.7%. This steady climb reflects a total national EV fleet that has now grown to over 454,000 vehicles.

Looking ahead to 2026, the trajectory remains strong. To stay on track with national emissions targets, industry experts and the EVC estimate that Australia will need to reach approximately 240,000 new EV sales this year, potentially pushing market share toward 16-19% as a wider variety of affordable models and commercial electric utes hit the market.
